  • Kirsan was elected FIDE President
  • at the Presidential Board Meeting in Singapore Kirsan introduced the knock-out system for the World Championships.

1996

  • the Women's World Championship Final in Jaen, Spain. Zsuzsa Polgar (Hungary) vs. Xie Jun (China). Winner — Polgar
  • the World Championship Final in Elista, Kalmykia ( Russia). Anatoly Karpov(Russia) vs. Gata Kamsky (USA). Winner — Karpov
  • the 32nd World Chess Olympiad and the 67th FIDE Congress in Erevan, Armenia. Kirsan was reelected FIDE President.

  • Chess was recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee (IOC)

During all these years Kirsan and his FIDE team also regularly organized the annual World Youth Championships and World U-20 Championships. Since 1999 World Children’s Chess Olympiads are running under FIDE Patronage.

Apart from this Kirsan did organize 6 Russian Championships and 8 Russian Women's Championships.
