Holland defeats Russia, Armenia in the lead 29 May 2006
The shock of the day was Russia's 1.5:2.5 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands. The three top boards enden in draws, while Sergey Rublevsky went down in an inferno of a game against Friso Nijboer.
Armenia beat Uzbekistan 2½:1½ to take the sole lead with 18 points. The sole full point came from Vladmir Akopian, who is currently the national coach of the Qatar team. The Netherlands are just half a point behind, while Russia has dropped to third with 17 points. The Netherlands have lost only one individual game (by Sokolov) from the 24 games they have played so far. Loek van Wely has scored 3.5/4 games, Nijboer Friso 2.5/3 and Erwin L'ami 2/2.
India defeated Germany 3:1 to move to equal 5-8th place. Anand drew with the black pieces against Naiditsch, as did Sasikiran against Yussupow. The points came from Pentala Harikrishna and Surya Sekar Ganguly against Christopher Lutz and Alexander Graf.
Sweden pulled off a 2.5:1.5 surprise over Bulgaria, while Ukraine could only manager a mandatory 2.5:1.5 over Iran, with Pavel Elajanov scoring the crucial win on board three. Belorussia scored a 3:1 win over Spain with Alexei Alexandrov defeating Alexei Shirov and Andrey Zhigalko doing the same to Marc Narciso Dublan.
Women's section
In the Womens' Section both Russia and Ukraine scored 2:1 wins, over Hungary and Spain, to stay in the lead with 14.5 and 14.0 points. USA, Romania and India scored similar victories over Mongolia, Armenia and Slovenia, with the points in the latter two matches coming on the third board. All three teams and Bulgaria have 13 points and share 4-7th place.
