Karpov vs Spassky Rapid Match

29 May 2006

Boris Spassky defeated Anatoly Karpov in the two game "Match des Légendes" on May 26th 2006 in Porto-Vecchio, Corsica.

The players haven't played much in recent years, although they did draw their two games at the Unzicker 80 event in Mainz in 2005 (prior to that their last meeting seems to have been 1988 in the GMA World Cup). The time rate was 15 mins + 3 secs in front of 300 children.

Much like Karpov's win against Kasparov in New York in 2002 this is I believe Spassky's first match win against Karpov. Very much after the Lord Mayor's show but still a match win.

Indeed Spassky seems to have only won two games previously against Karpov, the first game of their 1974 Candidates semi-final and the second game of their 1982 TV match in Hamburg. Karpov won both matches in the end.
