Olympiad R10: Armenia surges ahead, Russia in third.

01 June 2006

Armenia defeated China 2.5:1.5, with Vladimir Akopian taking the point in an amazing game against Zhang Zhong on board two (Gabrial Sargissian that drawing was an option he had so far overlooked). That gave back the Armenians their two-point lead. France vs the USA ended 2:2, but what a drama that was. At one stage it looked as though France would crush the US 3.5:0.5, but then Christian Bauer turned a win into a selfmate; and Nakamura swindled Fressinet in an ending where he was two pawns down. Russia beat Ukraine 3:1, with Peter Svidler and Evgeny Bareev scoring. The Russians are now back in third place. The Czech Republic, with David Navara on board one, scored heavily against Slovenia ( 3.5:0.5) to occupy fourth place.

Women's section

Ukraine beat Georgia 2:1 to retain their half-point lead. Russia defeated Bulgaria with the same score, with GM Alexandra Kosteniuk losing to GM Antoaneta Stefanova, and the two Kosintseva sisters winning their games. China defeated Armenia 2:1, India gave Mongolia a 3:0 thumping.
