Kalmykia's region is situated in the steppe, semidesert and desert zones. Its geographic coordinates are 44?50 and 40?10 longitude East and 41?40 and 47?35 latitude North. The territory extends for 448 km North to South, and 423 km West to East Population ? approx. 315 thousand. Kalmykia stands out among other regions of Russia in terms of demographic development with its relatively high natural population growth. In 2000 the birth rates were 26,4% higher than the average Russia's level. Kalmykia is one of the 22 regions of Russian Federation where the birth rates exceed the level of 10.0 per thousand Administrative center ? Elista with population of 109.9 thousand.  Climate - continental, i.e. hot and dry summers and cold winters with little snow.
The continental character of the climate intensifies essentially from West to East. The average January temperatures are negative throughout the whole republic: -7? to -9? in the South and South West and -10? to -12? in the North. The lowest temperature levels are -35? or lower in the Northern regions. The climate's peculiarity is a considerable number of sunny days, 280 per year. Average temperatures of July are 23,5? ? 25,5?. The absolute temperature maximum reaches 40? ? 44?. Agriculture ? cattle breeding, crop growing. Industry ? food and light industries: products of plant growing, wool, fur sheepskin, leather, etc. Mineral resources ? the basis of the mineral resources of Kalmykia is made by the fuel and energy resources (oil, gas, natural gas liquids), construction materials (sand, clay, shell rock), plain and mineral ground waters, agricultural chemical raw stuffs (potassium and rock salts, dolomites), bischofite raw materials, etc.  Culture ? 3 theatres, the State Touring and Concert Institution "Kalm?oncert", 2 museums, 3 theatres, 175 libraries, 246 clubs, School of Arts, 33 children musical and arts schools, 5 professional dancing teams.Very popular are the works of Kalmykia's writers, poets, playwrights. Creations of the People's Poet of Kalmykia David Kugultinov are well known not only in Kalmykia and other regions of Russia but also in many world's countries.
